Every day of our lives is a new adventure; a new odyssey and within this limited time we have on earth, we meet all kinds of people; different colours, different characters, different religions, different backgrounds of which in one way or another have an impact in our lives. Some will love us, some will teach us lessons, some will anticipate our downfall but all in all, all these people have created some sort of difference in us.

There may have been a time when you were accused for something you are not, maybe people misjudged your intentions, or questioned your trustworthiness, or doubted your abilities or pointed fingers at you for something you are innocent about then please remember this; a rose by any other name is still a rose.

People may hate you for what you are, they may criticize you, they may want to bring you down with their words but shut your ears to what they say; you don’t need such negative forces entering your brain. They may call you names, they may insult you but when you are a rose, even when they call you a cactus, it doesn’t make you one. The most important thing is that you are who you are. You know yourself better than anyone else; you know your struggles, your dreams, your pain and your path and you DON’T need to justify yourself in front of anyone.

One of the greatest lessons we are taught in life is that you shouldn’t have any expectations on anyone or anything. When you love then do so truly and be content with what you have in your heart even when the rest don’t love you back. When you give then give sincerely, give to whoever is in need even if it is your worst enemy and without hoping that one day they will appreciate you. Truth is, human beings barely appreciate anything they have or are given. So when you do anything do it with a pure heart and then leave. Dont wait for a thank you or anything. And when people start pointing fingers and criticizing you, then take a swift turn and walk away without saying anything. You don’t have to prove to anyone or even the world that you are good or that you meant good or that you cared. You don’t have to justify your actions. You don’t have to tell anyone, ‘I did this because it was the best for you’ because one other important thing we should all realize is that just like you can’t force a cow to drink from the river, then you also can’t convince a person or people who have pre-assumed attitudes on you, to think otherwise.

Life is too short for meaningless friendships, forced interactions or unnecessary conversations. So just do your thing and forget that you even did it. Not everyone deserves to know the real you so let them criticize who they think you are. For as long as you know that all your intentions are sincere and pure, don’t listen to what the world has to say about you. God knows the real you and that is what really ever mattered. Maybe one day they will understand and maybe they will also appreciate you but dont wait for that day because it may never come.

Many a times we are caught up in the storm of life and we get so much drenched by the fierce winds and the drizzling rain. We become depressed and feel lonely. Many a times we make sacrifices, we care for the wrong people, we belittle ourselves, we love other people and make them a priority more than ourselves and eventually forget our own existence; our own soul that needs to be fed with esteem, self realization and love.

What keeps pulling us behind is the fact that we keep extending our hearts to love someone else more than ourselves. What could be more important than yourself? Isnt it time to give yourself a lifetime treat; time by yourself,  time to explore your mind and soul and your imagination. Time to discover yourself, to know what happiness really means to you, time to have a definite focus in life.

A really interesting programme  of cheerful and constructive thinking by the late Sibyl F. Partridge-as it appears in Dale Carnegie’s ‘How To Stop Worrying and Start Living’ is called ‘Just For Today’ and it goes as follows:

1. Just for today I will be happy. As Abraham Lincoln said ‘most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.’ Happiness is from within; it is not a matter of externals.

2. Just for today I will try to adjust myself to what is and not try to adjust everything to my own desires.

3. Just for today I will take care of my body. I will exercise it, care for it, nourish it, not abuse it nor neglect it so that it will be a perfect machine for my bidding.

4. Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

5. Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways. I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out. I will do at least two things I don’t want to do-just for exercise.

6. Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress as becomingly as possible, talk low, act courteously, be liberal with praise, criticize not at all, nor find fault with anything and not try to regulate nor improve anyone.

7. Just for today I will live through this day only not to tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do things dor twelve hours that would appall me if I had to keep them up for a lifetime.

8. Just for today I will have a programme. I will write down what I expect to do every hour. I may not follow it exactly but I will have it. It will eliminate two pests; hurry and indecision.

9. Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. In this half hour sometimes I will think of God so as to get a little more perspective into my life.

 10. Just for today I will be unafraid especially I will not be afraid to be happy, to enjoy what is beautiful, to love and to believe that those I love, love me.
To add one more important point is to make a healthy decision; Decide to yourself that just for today I am going to love me more than anything else in the world. Just for today I will not worry about my past or get anxious over the future. Just for today I will appreciate all the good memories and hard learnt lessons. Just for today I am going to ME.
So just for today, wear the biggest smile on your face irregardless of all your troubles and miseries. Just for today smile to your enemy, smile to your neighbour, smile to the kid playing across the street.  Just for today, have time by yourself. Put off your phone, go to a quiet place; could be the beach or holy place of worship, take a walk or rather go for a jog. Go for window shopping, treat yourself with an ice cream even if its your last coin; remember you deserve it. Try something new; something you have never done before, develop new hobbies, make the best use of your today and never worry of the morrow, drop a coin or two to the beggar you meet on the way and most importantly,  have time to thank God for all that you have. And always remember that self appreciation comes before anything or anyone else. So just for today, stand by the mirror and look at yourself and say loudly ‘Just for today I will love JUST me and I very well know that when tomorrow comes I will have a brand new ‘today’ to love none more than myself!’

With the KCSE exams going on, it isn’t the time to relax or pressure yourself to read all the books in the library. It is important that you avoid any kind of pressure just as not relax more than needed for you. Here are some of the tips to follow as the exams are going on.

  • Read light things

Now that the examination is already in progress, don’t go collect all the books you can, thinking that is how you are working hard. It is at this time that you are expected to read smart; read light stuff that won’t confuse or make you get tired easily. Read the important short notes that you had before hand.

  • DO NOT read throughout the night

No one should lie to you that one whole night spent in reading will help you miraculously. It is your hard work in the entire year that matters right now. Spending the whole night cramming math formulas and biology terminologies will just make you more exhausted before the paper.

  • Sleep as early as you can

After you have gone through your short notes, say a short prayer and sleep! It is important that you wake up very fresh and ready to do the paper. Good sleep means a fresh mind and body.

  • Relax, but with a limit

As the exams are going on, you might, at a certain point start relaxing since you are already used to the exam season. It is good for you to quickly adapt to the system, relax, have some fun with friends during weekends, sign auto books but don’t overdo it too. Just as much as you have time for merry, have time to go through your notes and refresh your memory on what you learnt throughout the year.

  • Honesty matters.

It is at this time that you will have all kind of friends, relatives and even some teachers calling you to seek ‘shortcuts’ so you pass your exams. Remember, this is your life and no one else’s. If you decide to start your life with cheating, then do know that one time somewhere, what you did will reflect back. Be careful whom you associate with at this time. Avoid unnecessary panic because seeking ‘shortcuts’ will just mess your head the last minute.

  • Be confident

Believe in yourself, in your whole year hard work. Don’t let anyone corrupt your mind that you need anything extra to pass. You have all it needs and all you have to do is close your eyes and ears to the wrong people. You are the best and you will definitely achieve your goals.

  • Get closer to God

You need Him now more than ever. At this point, He is the only one who can help you succeed, not your teachers, not your friends, not your relatives and not even your parents. Get closer to Him, pray much and have faith in Him and He won’t let you down.

I believe you got all it takes to get to your goals. Have the same confidence you had from the start, keep up the pace and don’t let any obstacle block your way to success. Wishing you the very best in your exams.

As they say it, time waits for no man and if you think of it, wasn’t it just Monday yesterday? When did it get to Friday already? Days, hours, minutes, seconds fly past us like wind and eventually leave us behind still wondering; when did it get so late?

It all seems like just yesterday when I got admitted to the kindergarten and how I really cried for my mother, proceeding to primary school, secondary school to adulthood whereby everyone expects you to be a responsible being. But who could ever believe that those are so many years back and all what we are left with are memories and probably regrets of what we should have done and what not.

As the clock goes tick-tock tick-tock and as the finest sand trickles down the hour glass, did we ever pause to imagine the wisdom behind our Creator creating us with the abundance and yet still, limitation of time? It is for this reason that we must be organized and arrange how to spend our time wisely. In the time factor, we have two kinds of people; the organized being and the procrastinator.

An organized individual knows how to use time wisely. He is the kind that since his youth age already has a time plan of life. He would write down his dreams and goal and set time limits for himself. He has set a time for everything; what age to study, what age to work, when to get married, when to make a family, when to retire etc. He knows when he is to wake up, when he is to prepare himself to go for job, what time to leave the house and when to get there such that they arrive in time. It is such people that always know how to divide their schedules such that they have time for work, time for family, time for entertainment and everything in such an orderly manner. They barely have regrets in the time factor for they make the best use of it. They are the same kind of people who made the best use of their childhood, playing all kind of games and having fun all children need. They make use of their youth; creating amazing memories, doing great things that will always be remembered by the society, making time for studies and merry as well. When they got to the working age they immediately start hustling and looking for ways to learn a living. They get married and have a family when they are surely ready to take such responsibilities and finally retire in peace with no regrets of the time or opportunities they wasted.

The other kind is the procrastinator; the lazy being. He is the type that races behind time and expects the hour clock to miraculously stop for his sake. He would wake up late and blame everyone for not waking him up. He takes everything at ease and even when he is in a crisis, he wouldn’t refuse an invitation from friends to party instead of looking for a solution to his problems. If he is a student, he would procrastinate his study sessions each time for invalid reasons like watching a TV series that they can’t miss or a movie. Such a person doesn’t even have a purpose in life and such, ends up doing a lot of the wrong things before finally realizing their goals in life. They get to regret a lot due to the time and opportunities they wasted by being ignorant. They made so many wrong choices and hanged around with the wrong lazy people who were but enemies of time.

Time will never advise us but instead it will only give us time to correct ourselves but this is only possible if the Time-keeper himself wishes! So let us make a wise use of the much or little time we have because we can never guess when the end of our times will be!

Procrastination is another one of Satan’s workshops and most of us have been trapped in this so many times; that lazy feeling to postpone what we are to do today with the claim that we will do it tomorrow. What most people don’t realize is that the price of procrastination is always too steep.

What we can do today is much easier for us to do at the same moment because the next day the work becomes double and if postponed to the next few days, you realize you have a whole pile of work. That is when you start asking yourself where all that work is coming from while whining and complaining over and over again. Sometimes all you have to do is sacrifice a bit of your time or wealth or even energy to do what is required. If you want to start a business then you don’t have to wait till when you have saved so much. Start with the little much you have and once you do, you will realize that you will work even harder to sustain the business.

A person who planned to build a house ten years ago and still hasn’t, may never get to achieve his goal. If his aim at that time was that he should get five hundred thousand to start the house, then with today’s economy, the budget would be double or triple since everything is much more expensive than before. The house that could be built at five hundred thousand ten years ago would have to be built at one million today. Time changes, and the more you postpone, the further your goal seems to be. But maybe had this particular person sacrificed his little money, maybe just one hundred thousand and started the house, it would be complete by now.

There is always this morale that comes when you have decided to start a thing. With the one hundred thousand, the person may have started the foundation of the house. Next thing is that the person would be restless and would work day and night to complete the house. This is the same thing with house chores or even homework given at school. It is quite weird when a person decides to clean the entire house and leaves a corner for tomorrow or when a child does his homework and decides to leave the last two sums for another day. Once you start a thing, you would always have the urge to perfect it.

As for the one who keeps piling up work, then work for you will never end. Even if it is just about buying a present for your mother, procrastination is not appropriate. Today you may say that ‘let me buy myself these beautiful shoes, then tomorrow I will buy mother the thing she always loved’ and the next day, you will realize you also have another thing to do. In the end of it all, you end up not buying the present at all.

Same thing with charity, humanity or even forgiveness; do not wait for tomorrow to tell your loved ones how much you love them, ask for forgiveness at that same moment, give charity even if it is just a coin or two, be humble and live each day as it comes because… tomorrow never comes!

“A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life,” the words of the great boxer Mohammed Ali, the champion that lived. A person’s thinking is what defines them. Is the glass half full or half empty? It’s all upon you to decide. Life has never been easy on anyone and a problem is always what you make out of it. A problem is never a problem until you decide to make it one. Many lack the positivity in life and quit at the smallest test.

Mohammed Ali once more said, “I never ask ‘why me?’ for no condition. There’s so much good, I’ve been so blessed. God tries you. Some things are good. Some are bad. All of them are trials.”

Two people may be faced with the same challenge but one will take that to be a mere challenge for them and work it out as they can while the other will grow depressed over the ‘problem’ in hand, complaining gloomily and hoping that the problem will take a different turn itself. All champions started somewhere but definitely not in the spot light. Some of the greatest scientists and personalities were dyslexic, with very poor ability to read or write but they turned out smarter than those who were the ‘geniuses’ of the society.

Albert Einstein said, “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” You have to be smart and if you can’t be then act like one. Be optimistic and you’ll conquer the unconquered.

Albert once more said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it” and “a person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Whatever could be bothering you now, whether it’s the failure in school work or the incapability to cope with the job work or the money that you so direly need or the big blunder you made, don’t give up now. Have faith in God and in yourself; trust that you have all the strength in the world to overcome what seems to be a problem to you.

The late Malcolm X said, “Anytime you see someone more successful than you are, then they are doing something you aren’t!” so have time with yourself and think. Take a look at your glass of life. Look at the half filled water in it. Is the glass half full or half empty??  If you still call it ‘the half-empty’ glass then you are still living in your old pessimism but if you can now call it ‘the half full glass’ then, hurray! Way to go pal!

SO, IS THE GLASS HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY??

  • Have a goal

It is important that before one chooses the career to do, he/she should think well and consider the following things. Do have a goal on what you want to achieve in your life. Having set your goals is like a step stone to getting to your final destination.

  • Focus on your strengths

It is always better to focus on your strengths when choosing a career course. Do what you are good in and which stands to be the better option for you.

  • Be realistic

Don’t go for the almost impossible choices. Go for what you know you can handle. Don’t just assume you can do it while you can’t. For example is a person seeking a career that needs public speaking while he/she can barely speak out in a group of three. It becomes hectic for the person trying to fit into a course that doesn’t even suit them.

  • Don’t take up anything to please anyone

It is always important one does what he/she is comfortable and enjoys doing. Don’t do a career course because all your friends are doing it or because you heard that it pays well. Do what you think is right for you and not for others. Parents should not persuade their children into doing a course just because they succeeded in it or it is a course that shows your status. They should advise them instead and let them think for themselves what they can do.

  • Money isn’t everything

If your aim is to take up a career choice that pays you a hundred thousand in the first month then it is important you know that money isn’t everything. It isn’t wise enough to take up a career course that will stress you up and which doesn’t suit your personality just because you’re eyeing the big money at the end of the month. This will lead you into getting tired and exhausted of the job at a very early stage. You may consider the money you’ll earn but you must also think of yourself first.

  • Be focused

Be sure of what you want. Don’t be changing your goals each and every day; jumping from one course into another randomly. Decide to settle down into doing the one right thing.

  • Don’t get cheated

No one should lie to you that such and such a course is very tough to do and the other is the easiest thing to do. Every course has its difficulty however easy it may seem. Even the artist who just draws out of his own creativity and talent, there comes times he faces challenges. The challenges aren’t meant to make us fear doing the career but instead they make us stronger to get to our goals.

The most important thing is that you do what you enjoy. Even if it may be difficult or tiresome or monotonous but so long as you are comfortable with it, the rest of the things shouldn’t bother you. Have faith in yourself and go achieve your goals.

When I first came across the names of the most inspiring failures, I immediately wanted to share it to all the readers who are facing failure at the moment. Whenever I came across hardships and failed miserably in achieving what I want, I always remembered these great personalities. It is inspiring to know that the most famous successful personalities in the world are yet the most famous failures, but what makes them outstanding is how they tackled their failure to become very successful. These are just some among’st many other achievers in the world and who knows; maybe you and I could be the next people in the world charts?? Let us have the will power and confidence that we can get there someday.

  1. Bill Gates, founder and chairman of Microsoft, has literally changed the work culture of the world in the 21st century, by simplifying the way computer is being used. He happens to be the world’s richest man for the last one decade. However, in the 70’s before starting out, he was a Harvard University dropout. The most ironic part is that, he started a software company (that was soon to become Microsoft) by purchasing the software technology from “someone” for only $US50 back then.
  1. Abraham Lincoln, received no more than 5 years of formal education throughout his lifetime. When he grew up, he joined politics and had 12 major failures before he was elected the 16th President of the United States of America.
  1. Isaac Newtonwas the greatest English mathematician of his generation. His work on optics and gravitation made him one of the greatest scientists the world has even known. Many thought that Isaac was born a genius, but he wasn’t! When he was young, he did very poorly in grade school, so poor that his teachers became clueless in improving his grades.
  1. Ludwig van Beethoven,a German composer of classical music, is widely regarded as one of history’s supreme composers. His reputation has inspired – and in many cases intimidated – composers, musicians, and audiences who were to come after him. Before the start of his career, Beethoven’s music teacher once said of him “as a composer, he is hopeless”. And during his career, he lost his hearing yet he managed to produce great music – a deaf man composing music, ironic isn’t!
  1. Thomas Edison who developed many devices which greatly influenced life in the 20th century. Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 U.S patents to his name. When he was a boy his teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. When he set out on his own, he tried more than 9,000 experiments before he created the first successful light bulb.
  1. The Woolworth Company was a retail company that was one of the original five-and-ten-cent stores. The first Woolworth’s store was founded in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth and soon grew to become one of the largest retail chains in the world in the 20th century. Before starting his own business, Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21. But his employer would not let him serve any customer because he concluded that Frank “didn’t have enough common sense to serve the customers”.
  1. By acclamation, Michael Jordon is the greatest basketball player of all time. A phenomenal athlete with a unique combination of grace, speed, power, artistry, improvisational ability and an unquenchable competitive desire. Jordan single-handedly redefined the NBA superstar. Before joining NBA, Jordan was just an ordinary person, so ordinary that was cut from high school basketball team because of his “lack of skill”.
  1. Walter Disney was American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, and animator. One of the most well-known motion picture producers in the world, Disney founded a production company. The corporation, now known as The Walt Disney company, makes average revenue of US $30 billion annually. Disney started his own business from his home garage and his very first cartoon production went bankrupt. During his first press conference, a newspaper editor ridiculed Walt Disney because he had no good ideas in film production.
  1. Winston Churchill failed the 6th grade. However, that never stopped him to work harder! He strived and eventually became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Churchill is generally regarded as one of the most important leaders in Britain and world history. In a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002 to identify the “100 Greatest Britons”, participants voted Churchill as the most important of all.
  1. Steven Spielberg is an American film director. He has won 3 Academy Awards and ranks among the most successful filmmakers in history. Most of all, Steven was recognized as the financially most successful motion picture director of all time. During his childhood, Spielberg dropped out of junior high school. He was persuaded to come back and was placed in a learning-disabled class. He only lasted a month and then dropped out of school forever.
  2. Akio Morita is the founder of giant electric household products, Sony Corporation. First product was an electric rice cooker but it became a fail since it burned rice rather than cooking. Today, Sony is generating US$66 billion in revenue and ranked as the world’s 6th largest electronic and electrical company.
  3. Albert Einstein, when he was young; his parents thought he was mentally retarded. His grades in school were so poor and he even considered himself stupid. However, he became a theoretical physicist widely regarded as the most important scientist of the 20th century. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905 and “for his services to Theoretical Physics”.
  4. John Grisham‘s first novel was rejected by sixteen agents and twelve publishing houses. He kept on practicing the art of writing until he became best known as a novelist and author for his works of modern legal drama. The media has coined him as one of the best novel authors even alive in the 21st century and his books are read worldwide.
  5. Marilyn Monroe was dropped by 20th Century-Fox, one year into her contract, because her producer thought she was unattractive and cannot act. She didn’t give up on her dreams and eventually she was recognized by the public as the 20th century’s most famous movie star and pop icon.
  6. Henry Ford not only revolutionized industrial production in the United States and Europe, but also had such influence over the 20th century economy and society yet his first two automobile companies failed. His first failure did not stop him from incorporating Ford Motor Company and being the first to apply assembly line manufacturing to the production of affordable automobiles in the world. His combination of mass production, high wages and low prices to consumers has initiated a management school known as “Fordism”. He became one of the three most famous and richest men in the world during his time.
  7. Soichiro Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation during a job interview as engineer after World War Two. He continued to be jobless and soon, his neighbors started buying his home-made scooters.  He set out on his own to start his own company, Honda. Today, the Company has grown to become the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer and one of the most profitable automakers. With a global network of 437 subsidiaries, Honda develops, manufactures, and markets a wide variety of products ranging from small general-purpose engines and scooters to specialty sports cars.

I have a dream. Just so-big a dream that would make you stagger because of its weight, if I handed it over to you. It is what makes me wake up each morning with new hope, new faith and new dedication. There’s always something special about living your dream. It is what drives you to wake up cheerfully and ignore the Monday blues, the over-load of work on your desk or that your cat actually drunk your milk that was for breakfast. There is something more to it, some power…it is all hope that your bright day will soon come. It’s about having focus on what you want to do, being dedicated and putting in a lot of hard work. I met so many talented people in my life, people who actually sleep on what God has bestowed on them and expect just one day a miracle will happen and they will have all they ever wanted. Maybe they seize to realize that miracles ended with prophet hood or maybe they still live in the fantasy of that song we sang at kindergarten whereby the farmer luckily digs out some diamond: “Bwana Tumbo mwenye shamba alipanda viazi, akachimba chimba chimba akaona almasi! Lo! Lo! Bahati kwa mtu mwenye shamba!” is that so??

What makes a dreamer an achiever is the passion one has towards what they do, however difficult it may seem or how monotonous it may be, without complaining, but instead, doing it to their best. It is just like that stubborn maths sum that doesn’t want to be solved yet and X doesn’t seem to appear on your way but you keep trying till you succeed. This just reminds me of a regular quote by someone very special, my mum: ‘for you to succeed, you must try and try and try’ and yeah after all, nothing comes on a silver platter!

To commemorate the completion of my one year at Coast this Week, I’d like to make this edition a special dedication to all my fans and all the amazing writers that read our paper each week.

Take a tight grip on the pen,

Have ready a paper that is plain,

This is not just about the pain,

But about all your dreams to have you claim.

Let the ink pour its magic,

The story full of tragic,

With so well painted a tactic

Gently, without being much frantic.

Oh what’s a pen and paper without emotion?

Word by word with so much precaution,

It could be about that devastating explosion,

Or perhaps your inner most expression!

Keep the words flowing,

And your memory, loading,

Touch the heart of the one mourning,

And one who is always frowning.

All you have to do is create happiness,

In this world, full of madness,

Let your words bring the brightness,

To celebrate all world’s greatness.

Venture into the puzzling history,

The things that were always a mystery,

Or maybe of the grand victory,

Of that incredible outstanding missy.

Let your mind wander far and wide,

Into the open and what’s in hide,

Could be of the runaway bride,

Or of the downfall of manly pride.

Imagine, imagine, imagine

Let your ink fill between your margins,

Narrate of the famous assassin

And even in politics be sure to indulge in.

Go capture that inside story,

Even if it means going up the storey,

Or maybe even to the quarry,

Can’t you do that much for your own glory?

Be sure to be nothing but the best,

All people’s attention ensure you arrest,

You just have to keep away the haste,

And continue with the spirit of great zest.

A hand I give to all those who think,

Who take a risk to be on a new story’s brink,

Whom we always want to mimic,

With a drop of their magic ink!

To all the aspiring writers reading this, I salute you all!
